Dead by Daylight | Beginner Guide

What is Dead by Daylight?

Dead by Daylight pits one player-controlled Killer against four player-controlled Survivors in a tense game of cat and mouse. Survivors must repair generators scattered across the map to power the exit gates, then escape before the Killer catches and sacrifices them. The Killer's job is to find, down, hook, and ultimately sacrifice all Survivors to a malevolent entity. Both sides earn progression currency after each match, which is used to unlock new perks and abilities for their roster of characters.

Note
Generators are the real priority, not hiding
New Survivors often think Dead by Daylight is about hiding from the Killer as long as possible, but the real objective is repairing generators quickly and efficiently. Sitting still and hiding wastes precious time and makes it much harder for your team to power the exits. A Survivor actively working on gens, even while taking some risks, contributes far more to a successful escape than one who spends the whole match crouching in a corner.

The core loop

Every session follows the same structure. Understanding this before you start makes everything click.

1
Match Starts
Five players load into a randomly selected map. The Killer spawns in the middle while four Survivors spawn at various points around the edges and immediately begin looking for generators to repair.
2
Repair Generators
Survivors locate and repair 5 of the 7 generators on the map by holding a skill-check-based interaction. Completing all 5 powers the two exit gates, which Survivors must then open to escape.
3
Killer Hunts
The Killer patrols the map using their unique power and basic attacks to find, chase, and down Survivors. A downed Survivor is picked up and carried to a hook, where they are sacrificed to the Entity over time.
4
Rescue & Heal
Teammates can unhook a hooked Survivor and heal injured allies, but doing so makes noise and can alert the Killer. Managing when to rescue versus continuing on generators is a key strategic decision.
5
Escape or Sacrifice
Once exit gates are powered, Survivors race to open and escape through them while the Killer tries to stop them. Any Survivor sacrificed on their third hook is eliminated. The match ends when all Survivors escape or are eliminated.

Generator Repair & Skill Checks

Repairing generators is the core task for Survivors and requires holding an interact button while occasionally hitting skill checks, circular prompts that appear randomly on screen. Missing a skill check causes a loud noise burst that alerts the Killer and regresses the generator slightly. Hitting the smaller 'great' zone on a skill check speeds up repair progress, so staying focused while on a gen is important.

Generator Repair & Skill Checks
Watch out
Don't Tap Gens
Tapping a generator to check if it's already claimed can accidentally trigger a skill check failure, giving away your position to the Killer for no benefit.

Chase & Loops

When the Killer spots you, a chase begins and you need to survive long enough to waste their time while teammates work on generators. Survivors use map structures called 'loops', fences, pallets, and walls, to create distance. Knowing which loops are strong and how to use them efficiently is one of the most important survivor skills to develop.

Chase & Loops
Warning
Don't Run to Teammates
Leading the Killer toward other Survivors working on generators will get your whole team killed. Always run away from your teammates when being chased.

Hooks & Sacrifice Mechanic

When a Survivor is hooked, they go through two hook stages before being sacrificed permanently. Teammates can rush in to unhook them, but the hooked Survivor must wait and not struggle too early. Being unhooked resets your stage counter only under certain perk conditions, so being hooked repeatedly across a match is increasingly dangerous.

Hooks & Sacrifice Mechanic
Watch out
Don't Obsess Over Unhooking
Rushing to unhook a teammate the second they are hooked, especially right in front of the Killer, is called a 'body block unhook' and usually results in two players going down immediately.

Perks & Loadout Building

Both Killers and Survivors can equip up to 4 perks per match, which provide passive bonuses or powerful situational abilities. Perks are unlocked on specific characters but can be transferred to any character of the same role via the Bloodweb progression system. As a beginner, focus on learning a few strong universal perks rather than trying to min-max a complex build.

Perks & Loadout Building
Tip
Start With Starter Perks
Each base character comes with starting perks that are well-suited for beginners. Stick with these until you understand what the perks actually do in practice before branching out.

Terror Radius & Stealth

The Killer emits a heartbeat-like audio cue called a Terror Radius that Survivors can hear when the Killer is nearby. The radius size varies by Killer, some have enormous ones, some can suppress it entirely. Survivors can use this audio cue to anticipate when to drop generators, prepare for chases, or sneak toward hooks for rescues while the Killer is occupied elsewhere.

Terror Radius & Stealth
Watch out
Some Killers Have No Terror Radius
Killers like The Wraith, The Ghost Face, and The Pig can suppress or eliminate their Terror Radius entirely. Never assume you are safe just because you don't hear a heartbeat.

Common beginner mistakes

Ignoring Generators
New Survivors spend too much time hiding or following teammates instead of working on generators. Every second not spent on a gen is time the Killer has to find and eliminate your team.
Running to Teammates in Chase
Leading the Killer directly toward a teammate repairing a generator is one of the fastest ways to lose a match. Always run in the opposite direction of your team when being chased.
Tunneling the Same Hook
As Killer, focusing all attention on one Survivor and chasing them immediately after unhooking, called 'tunneling', can work but leaves three others free to do generators uncontested, often costing you the match.
Ignoring Map Loops
Survivors who run in open fields rather than navigating toward pallets and windows are caught almost instantly. Learning even basic loop structures dramatically increases how long you survive in a chase.
Unhooking Into the Killer
Attempting a rescue while the Killer is standing right next to the hook almost always results in both the rescuer and the hooked Survivor being downed immediately. Be patient and wait for the Killer to leave.
Camping as Killer
Standing directly next to a hooked Survivor and waiting, known as 'camping', prevents the team from rescuing but also gives three Survivors free time on generators with no pressure. It's a common beginner trap that often leads to losing despite getting a sacrifice.

Quick tips

Learn the layout of each map's main building, these central structures almost always have strong loops that are useful in every match.
As Survivor, always be doing something productive: repairing a gen, healing a teammate, or opening an exit gate. Idle time loses matches.
Keep an eye on the generator count in the top left of your screen, knowing how many gens are left tells you how much pressure the team is under.
Use the in-game audio heavily, generator sounds, crow disturbances, and the Killer's Terror Radius heartbeat all give you critical information without needing to see anything.
The Borrowed Time perk is invaluable for rescuers, it prevents the unhooked Survivor from being instantly downed again while the Killer is nearby, giving them time to run.
Don't open the exit gates the moment they are powered, tell a teammate and try to open together or distract the Killer first, as the gate-opening animation takes a long time and leaves you vulnerable.
After each match, review which perks the Killer or Survivors used and look them up, understanding what you lost to or what helped you is the fastest way to improve.
