Update 0.4.0 arrives with a brand-new 16 km² hunting map, a fully upgradable lodge headquarters, two new shotguns with choke mechanics, and over a hundred fixes and improvements ahead of the 1.0 launch on September 29, 2026.

What's new
Way of the Hunter 2's Update 0.4.0 is one of its most substantial early access patches yet, delivering a new hunting location, a player headquarters, new weapons, sweeping animal improvements, and over a hundred bug fixes and tweaks shaped by community feedback. With the 1.0 release now confirmed for September 29, 2026, the team is clearly pushing hard to polish every corner of the experience.
The update introduces a fresh location inspired by North American wildlife, clocking in at roughly 16 km² (about 6 square miles). Smaller than the game's full reserves, it still offers meaningful new terrain to explore and is home to species already familiar to players: Wild Duck, Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, Snowshoe Hare, and Ptarmigan. It also sets the stage for the new headquarters feature.
Nestled on the new map is your personal lodge, the Hearth & Hunt Headquarters. This fully upgradable base serves as a hub for displaying trophies, showcasing achievements, and reflecting your progression across all of Way of the Hunter 2's reserves. A new NPC named Elijah guides you through the lodge's features, from trophy displays to a shooting range. The shooting range will expand in future updates to let players try weapons they don't yet own.
Two new shotguns join the arsenal in this update, including a collaboration piece from Merkel. More importantly, shotgun choke has been added to the game, letting hunters adjust pellet spread tightness to suit the range of their shot. A tighter choke keeps pellets grouped at distance, while a more open choke spreads them faster for close-range situations. A new pellet spread display on the Claim screen and a dedicated air sac organ for birds round out the shotgun overhaul.
Several animal-related changes arrived based directly on player feedback. Crocodiles have been resized to better reflect their real-world scale, one of the most requested fixes since launch. Duck AI has been reworked, including improvements to flight, landing, calling, and decoying. Vitals and skin materials have been refreshed for carnivores and other species, and the charge sounds for Hippopotamus, Cape Buffalo, and Southern Lion have been improved. High-energy calibers have also been rebalanced to more reliably achieve lethal results.
Herd group sizes now dynamically grow or shrink based on population health, making reserve management feel more consequential over time. On the quality-of-life side, separate audio sliders for animals and your dog let you fine-tune the soundscape independently. Localized voice-over support has been expanded to Chinese, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish. Persistent bugs have also been addressed, including issues with using gear while prone, unintended speed boosts from timed jumps, and various taxidermy display problems.
The Experimental Branch multiplayer build has received a significant update as well. Synchronization issues affecting hosts, clients, animals, and vehicles have been resolved, user marker color coding and management has been fixed, and trophy visibility for clients has been corrected. The team reports growing confidence that multiplayer will move to the default branch soon.
The highlights above are just a fraction of what 0.4.0 contains. The full patch notes cover more than a hundred individual fixes and adjustments across animals, weapons, UI, audio, and gameplay systems.
