What Are Generators and Why Do They Matter?

Generators are the primary objective for Survivors in Dead by Daylight. Each match features 7 generators scattered across the map, and Survivors must repair 5 of them to power the Exit Gates and create a chance to escape. Without completing generators, the Exit Gates cannot be opened and Survivors have no way out.

What Are Generators and Why Do They Matter?
Tip
The Golden Rule
Always prioritize generators over everything else. Healing, looting chests, and other actions are secondary to powering those 5 gens.

How to Repair a Generator

Walk up to a generator and hold the interact button to begin repairing, you will see a progress bar fill up over roughly 80 seconds of continuous repair time when working alone. Skill checks will randomly appear as spinning dials with a needle; hit the correct zone when prompted or you will cause an explosion that alerts the Killer and loses repair progress. Successfully landing Great Skill Checks (hitting the smaller bonus zone) will speed up repair progress slightly.

Watch out
Failed Skill Checks Reveal Your Position
A failed Skill Check creates a loud explosion sound and a burst of sparks that the Killer can hear from across the map. Stay focused and release the repair button if you need a moment to react.

Co-op Repairs and Generator Efficiency

Multiple Survivors can work on the same generator simultaneously, dramatically reducing the time needed to complete it, two Survivors repair significantly faster than one, and three faster still. However, grouping all Survivors on a single generator is risky because the Killer can down multiple players in one visit. A common strategy is to split across two or three generators at once, keeping pressure on the Killer while maintaining map coverage.

Powering and Opening the Exit Gates

Once 5 generators are repaired, an alarm sounds and both Exit Gates become powered, at this point, any Survivor can walk to an Exit Gate panel and hold the interact button to open it, which takes several seconds. Exit Gates are found at opposite ends of the map and are marked clearly once powered. Be aware that the Killer also hears the alarm and knows the gates are powered, so they will often rush to patrol them.

Warning
Do Not Open Gates Alone if the Killer is Nearby
Standing at the gate panel for several seconds makes you completely vulnerable. Opening a gate is a high-risk moment, look and listen for the Killer before committing, or have a teammate watch your back.

The Hatch: An Emergency Exit

If most Survivors are dead and you are the last one standing, a Hatch will spawn somewhere on the map as an alternative escape route. The Hatch glows and emits a distinctive wind sound, making it findable by ear if you move around the map quietly. If the Killer finds and closes the Hatch before you reach it, one final Exit Gate will become openable for a limited time, giving you one last chance to escape.

Tip
Listen for the Hatch
The Hatch makes a loud rushing wind noise. If you are the last Survivor, stop moving occasionally and listen carefully, it can often be heard before it is seen.

Key Tips for Generators and Exit Gates

Spread generator repairs across different areas of the map so the Killer cannot patrol all of them at once.
If you are interrupted mid-repair, the generator slowly regresses over time, other Survivors should try to hop on it quickly to prevent losing progress.
Before opening an Exit Gate, peek around corners and listen for the Killer's heartbeat terror radius to avoid walking into a trap.
Once an Exit Gate is open, do not linger inside the exit area, move through it quickly and leave the match to secure your escape.
If a teammate is being chased, consider continuing your generator repair rather than abandoning it, completing the gen creates long-term pressure that benefits the whole team.
