R.E.P.O. | Monsters & Stealth Guide

How to avoid, hide from, and deal with the monsters in R.E.P.O.

Monsters & Stealth

Monsters are the main threat in every R.E.P.O. run. Each one has different behaviour, movement patterns, and detection abilities. Most monsters respond to sound, sight, and proximity. You do not have to fight every monster you encounter, patience and stealth will get you through most situations.

Note
Detection basics
Standing players are detected after 1 second in a monster's field of view. Crouching players need 2.5 seconds. Crawling players need 5 seconds. Staying low dramatically increases your survival time.

Sound and voice chat

Many monsters have very keen hearing. Running, dropping items, and voice chat all create sound. If you are close to a monster, stop talking, proximity voice chat is audible in the game world and some monsters will home in on your voice.

Watch out
Zip your lips
When near a monster, mute yourself with [B] and stop using text-to-speech. Some monsters are far more perceptive to sound than others. When in doubt, stay silent.

Hiding and sneaking

When you spot a monster, do not panic and run, running creates noise. Crouch and move slowly to a hiding spot. Tables, shelves, and large furniture all work. Have an exit prepared, as some monsters can reach under furniture.

Tip
Patience wins
Most monsters have patrol patterns. If you hide and wait, they will often move away on their own. Fighting is almost always riskier than waiting.

Monster overview

There are 3 danger tiers of monsters in R.E.P.O. Danger Level 1 monsters are the least threatening, the Gnome, Peeper, and Shadow Child among others. Danger Level 2 monsters are more aggressive and harder to shake, including the Headgrab, Chef, and Mentalist. Danger Level 3 monsters are the most dangerous: the Headman, Huntsman, Clown, and Reaper can end a run quickly if you are unprepared. As you progress to higher levels, more dangerous monsters appear more frequently.

Tip
Learn each monster individually
Every monster has unique behaviour, weaknesses, and counters. Our full Monster Guide covers all of them in detail, highly recommended once you have the basics down.

Quick monster tips

Gnomes: pick them up and throw them to eliminate them instantly. No need to run.
Peeper (ceiling eye): do not stare at it or it deals damage. Look away or press Q to tumble.
Hidden (invisible): only visible via footsteps or breath. It cannot kill you, a teammate grabbing you cancels its move.
Noisy valuables (radios, gramophones, TVs, clocks) reduce monster respawn timers by 5 seconds per second of noise.
Museum lasers stun monsters for 1.5-20 seconds depending on monster weight. Lead monsters into them to escape.
