How to avoid, hide from, and deal with the monsters in R.E.P.O.
Monsters are the main threat in every R.E.P.O. run. Each one has different behaviour, movement patterns, and detection abilities. Most monsters respond to sound, sight, and proximity. You do not have to fight every monster you encounter, patience and stealth will get you through most situations.
Many monsters have very keen hearing. Running, dropping items, and voice chat all create sound. If you are close to a monster, stop talking, proximity voice chat is audible in the game world and some monsters will home in on your voice.
When you spot a monster, do not panic and run, running creates noise. Crouch and move slowly to a hiding spot. Tables, shelves, and large furniture all work. Have an exit prepared, as some monsters can reach under furniture.
There are 3 danger tiers of monsters in R.E.P.O. Danger Level 1 monsters are the least threatening, the Gnome, Peeper, and Shadow Child among others. Danger Level 2 monsters are more aggressive and harder to shake, including the Headgrab, Chef, and Mentalist. Danger Level 3 monsters are the most dangerous: the Headman, Huntsman, Clown, and Reaper can end a run quickly if you are unprepared. As you progress to higher levels, more dangerous monsters appear more frequently.
