R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Banger

BehaviorHidden usefulnessWeaknessesStrategyHow to kill

The Banger is a living bomb that spawns in groups and charges at players with a lit fuse. Small and easy to pick up, but dangerous if you ignore the warning sounds.

R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Banger

The Banger is a Level 2 monster in R.E.P.O. that functions as a living bomb. It looks like a small skeletal creature with a fuse, and its whole purpose is to run up to you and detonate.

Bangers always spawn in groups of three, which is what makes them genuinely dangerous. One Banger is a nuisance. Three Bangers with lit fuses chasing you through a tight corridor is a very different problem.

Behavior

Bangers can detect players by sight, sound, and touch. The moment one spots a player or takes damage, its fuse ignites and it charges toward the nearest player. After roughly 14 to 15 seconds, it explodes. The fuse cannot be extinguished once lit, and if a Banger is killed before it goes off, it explodes immediately.

The explosion launches nearby players and deals up to 30 damage if they are too close, plus a 3-second stun. Because Bangers spawn in threes, one igniting tends to set off a chain reaction: the explosion from one Banger will trigger others nearby, even if their fuses were not yet lit, and the blast can send them flying in unpredictable directions.

Bangers have three distinct fuse sounds that act as a timer. A weak hiss means roughly 10 seconds remain. A stronger hiss means roughly 4 seconds. A short yell is the final warning before detonation.

Bangers can be picked up before or after the fuse is lit, with zero strength required. When thrown, they deal 0 to 15 damage to enemies on impact depending on how they land, stun players on contact but do not stun enemies, and their explosion deals 10 damage to monsters and stuns them for 5 seconds.

Hidden usefulness

Because Bangers can be picked up at any time with no strength requirement, a lit Banger is actually a free projectile. Throwing one at a tough monster, especially a Level 3 enemy, deals 10 damage and stuns it for 5 seconds, giving your team a real opening. The explosion radius also catches multiple nearby enemies, so leading a group of Bangers toward another monster and then breaking away can let them do the work for you.

Weaknesses

Bangers have only 50 HP, making them among the easiest monsters to kill in terms of raw health. Their biggest weakness is how light they are: zero strength is needed to pick them up, so any player can grab and throw one at any point. They are also slow enough on stairs that you can outpace them if you get high enough, and they will just detonate on the steps.

The main danger is their chain-reaction behavior. Killing one while others are nearby can trigger a rapid cascade of explosions that punishes players who cluster together.

Strategy

  • When a group of Bangers ignites, spread out immediately to avoid sharing the blast radius with teammates and protect nearby valuables.
  • Lead them away from other monsters and valuables before the fuse runs out.
  • Walk calmly while they follow you, then sprint hard when you hear the loud final hiss. Breaking into a sprint at that moment will put enough distance between you and the blast in most cases.
  • Stairs are your friend. Climbing stairs fast enough will leave them behind, and they will blow up on the steps without reaching you.
  • If you lose line of sight and hide under furniture, they may stop chasing even with a lit fuse, though they will still eventually explode wherever they are.
  • Do not cluster with teammates when Bangers are chasing you, a single explosion can chain into the rest of the group.

How to kill

With only 50 HP, a Banger dies in a couple of hits from almost any weapon. The cleanest method is to pick it up before its fuse is lit, since zero strength is required, slam it twice with your grabber, then throw it into a pit or an empty room. This removes it entirely without triggering the explosion near you or your team.

If the fuse is already lit, the safest kill is still a throw: grab it, aim at a wall or a pit away from players and valuables, and release. It will explode on impact or shortly after, well away from the group. If you are throwing it at an enemy instead, aim directly at the target to maximize impact damage and set up the 5-second stun.

Avoid shooting or meleeing a lit Banger in place. Killing it in position detonates it immediately at that location, which is dangerous if teammates or valuables are nearby. Pick it up and relocate it first whenever possible.
