R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Shadow Child

BehaviorHidden usefulnessWeaknessesStrategyHow to kill

The Shadow Child is a shy, teleporting creature that punishes anyone who stares at it for too long, dealing a hefty 50 damage with a single grab attack.

R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Shadow Child

The Shadow Child is a Level 1 monster in R.E.P.O. that looks unsettling but won't bother you as long as you keep your eyes to yourself. It's one of those threats that rewards discipline over aggression, because the moment you stare at it, things get ugly fast.

Behavior

The Shadow Child spends its time teleporting around the map at random, giggling each time it blinks to a new spot. When it notices a player looking directly at it, it doesn't attack immediately. Instead, a pair of hands on its back slowly emerge and grow, the longer the player holds their gaze, the bigger and more menacing those hands become. Looking away in time causes the hands to shrink back down and the encounter resets. If a player stares too long and the hands reach full size, the Shadow Child shrieks, forces the player's vision toward its face, then grabs them with a "Yoink!" and yanks them in, dealing 50 damage and sending the player flying. It then vanishes before the player can retaliate. Notably, the Shadow Child reacts to eye contact even when facing away from the player, so there's no safe angle to observe it from directly. It also attacks crouched players, so crouching doesn't help you avoid it.

Hidden usefulness

The Shadow Child disappears permanently after being stunned and recovering, which means a well-timed stun is an instant removal rather than a kill. A Tumble Launch into it will stun it and cause it to despawn on recovery, letting you clear it from the map at the cost of only 5 HP. The Boltzap is even better for this, since it stuns the Shadow Child without costing you any health, has a large ammo capacity, and the short stun duration means the Shadow Child recovers and despawns quickly.

Weaknesses

The Shadow Child has only 150 HP, but its habit of disappearing the moment it's hit makes chipping it down with physics damage unreliable. It only takes 10 damage from physics, compared to the usual 25, so throwing objects at it is especially inefficient. Its biggest exploitable weakness is the stun mechanic: any stun causes it to despawn on recovery, making stun-based tools a reliable way to remove it from play entirely without needing to deplete its health.

Strategy

  • Never look directly at the Shadow Child. You can glance at it from the very edge of your screen without triggering it.
  • At close range, looking at the lower half of its legs is safe.
  • If multiple Shadow Children are present, look directly downward to limit your line of sight and carefully navigate past them.
  • If you want to remove it without a fight, use a stun method rather than trying to whittle its HP down.
  • You can walk toward or even past the Shadow Child freely as long as you don't stare at it.

How to kill

Killing the Shadow Child outright is tricky because it disappears when attacked with physics-based hits, and it only takes 10 damage per physics hit instead of the usual 25. Your best bet for a clean removal is a stun rather than a traditional kill: hit it with a Boltzap or perform a Tumble Launch into it to stun it. Once stunned, it will despawn permanently when it recovers, no HP depletion needed. If you genuinely want to kill it by reducing its 150 HP, use a strong direct-damage weapon rather than throwing objects at it, and be ready for it to vanish mid-fight. The stun-and-despawn method is faster, cheaper, and more reliable in almost every situation.
