R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Gambit

BehaviorHidden usefulnessWeaknessesStrategyHow to kill

The Gambit grabs players and spins a roulette wheel that can heal you, reward you with cash, or nearly kill you. With a 56.25% chance of a negative outcome, this is one of R.E.P.O.'s most unpredictable threats.

R.E.P.O. | Monster guide: Gambit

The Gambit is a Level 2 monster in R.E.P.O. that plays by its own rules. It roams the map quietly enough, but the moment it spots you it gives chase, grabs you, and forces you to spin a giant roulette wheel hidden inside its oversized head. What comes next is entirely out of your hands.

The wheel has five possible outcomes: a 50% chance to lose 50 HP (red), a 25% chance to heal 25 HP (green), a 12.5% chance to receive a $5,000 Money Bag (yellow), a 6.25% chance to have your HP restored to maximum (white), and a 6.25% chance to have your HP reduced to 1 (black). That means there is a 56.25% chance the spin ends badly for you.

Behavior

The Gambit wanders aimlessly until it spots a player through line of sight, hears them nearby, or makes physical contact. Once aware of a target it gives chase without hesitation, skipping any pause even when the player is under an object. If it catches you, it locks you in tumble mode directly in front of it, opens its mouth to reveal the roulette wheel, and the spin begins. You are held in place and forced to watch until the wheel lands.

Once the spin resolves and the reward is given, the Gambit closes its mouth, drops you if you survived, and sprints away to a far part of the map. During this retreat phase it ignores all players entirely. After reaching its destination it resumes normal roaming.

The Gambit can also detect crouching players, so staying low is not a reliable way to avoid it.

Hidden usefulness

Being grabbed by a Gambit is not automatically a disaster. A green result heals 25 HP, a white result restores you to full HP, and a yellow result hands you a $5,000 Money Bag to extract. If your team is low on health and healing items are scarce, allowing a Gambit to grab a player is a genuine gamble worth considering. The upside outcomes are real, just outnumbered by the bad ones.

Additionally, a grabbed player can rapidly grab the Gambit back to force it to skip the pre-spin delay and begin the wheel immediately, which can save time in a dangerous situation.

Weaknesses

The Gambit has only 150 HP, making it relatively easy to bring down. Its biggest mechanical vulnerability is the interruption system: if it is stunned while the wheel is spinning or mid-reward, the grab is cancelled and an explosion deals 60 damage to the held player. This is a double-edged weakness since the interruption punishes the grabbed player, but it does stop the spin.

There is a very brief window right after the grab but before the wheel animation starts where stunning the Gambit will not trigger the explosion at all. Timing a stun into that window cancels the whole sequence cleanly.

If your strength is 9 or above and you grab the Gambit back while it is holding you, holding on too long will lift it, which counts as a stun and triggers the interruption explosion on yourself.

After delivering a reward and fleeing, the Gambit is completely passive and non-threatening. That retreat window is an ideal time to finish it off safely.

Strategy

  • The Gambit can see, hear, and detect you by touch, so there is no reliable way to sneak past it once it is nearby.
  • If your team is healthy and stocked, avoid it and let it wander. If someone is low on health and healing is unavailable, a grab is a coin flip worth considering.
  • Never stun the Gambit mid-spin unless the wheel is about to land on black, since the 60-damage interruption explosion is preferable to having your HP set to 1.
  • Wait for the brief pre-spin window to stun cleanly without triggering the explosion.
  • Watch out for other monsters nearby. You are not invulnerable while held, and a second monster attacking you during the spin can stack damage on top of a bad wheel result.
  • The Gambit's retreat phase after a spin is the safest opportunity to deal damage or kill it without putting anyone at risk.

How to kill

With only 150 HP, the Gambit is not a tough kill once you get a clean shot at it. The safest window to engage is during its retreat phase, right after it has completed a spin and is sprinting away from players. In this state it will not chase or grab anyone, so you can follow and attack without risk.

Any standard weapon will do the job. Focus damage during the retreat window or immediately after it drops a player. If you need to kill it mid-grab, wait for the very brief moment between the grab completing and the wheel animation starting, then stun it. A well-timed stun in that window cancels the interaction with no explosion penalty, leaving the Gambit exposed and stunned on the ground with its strength breakpoint dropped to 3, making it easy to pick up and deal with. Two to three solid hits from most weapons will finish it off from there.
